Otago Peninsula and the harbour it shelters are world-famous for their remarkable wildlife, including Yellow Eyed Penguins (the world’s rarest penguin) and a colony of majestic Royal Albatross. The Peninsula is also home to Larnach Castle – a grand old home with a fascinating history. Take a harbour cruise or drive out to one of the charming little waterfront villages for an ice-cream and a spot of gallery-combing.
Portobello A lovely 45-minute drive from town, the laid-back waterfront village of Portobello is home to numerous craftspeople, a couple of pubs and a fantastic ice-cream store.
Port Chalmers Home to many who came to Dunedin as students and didn’t want to leave, Port Chalmers is definitely worth a visit for its craft studios, design stores and cafés. Don’t miss Careys Bay Pub – home to one of the largest private collections of Ralph Hotere paintings.
