Brown Bear Earthquake Survival Tips
Like most people in Christchurch Brown Bear reckons the most important part of healing is getting back to normality and into some sort of routine. To help you, here are some special Earthquake Survival Tips:

  • Read up. Check out the handy factsheets about coping with stress by the New Zealand Ministry of Health
  • Eat well. Many restaurants outside of the CBD have reopened their doors and are busier than ever. Soak up the buzzing atmosphere, hang out with friends and treat yourself to a delicious meal.
  • Stick to a routine. Children need a routine in their day to feel safe and secure. But this doesn’t only apply to kids. Getting your morning cup of coffee at the same place, doing the washing on the same days or going to bed at the same time are small but important things to help you feel better.
  • Talk, talk, talk. Whether you do it with a group of friends, your partner, via email or by writing down your thoughts and emotions on a napkin – getting it out helps you deal with it.
  • Take a break. Go for a weekend trip, stroll along a vineyard, play a round of golf while enjoying gorgeous views, go for a walk in the autumn sun, catch a movie or an event to take your mind off things. Just make sure you book ahead because many Cantabrians will have exactly the same idea.
  • Indulge. Get a back massage after shovelling all that liquefaction! Or why not buy yourself a treat with a charity earthquake auction on Trademe? Get your hands on a bach getaway, a gift basket full of consoling chocolates or some Canterbury canvas art!
  • Shop till you drop. Go on a guilt-free shopping spree. First, you deserve it; second, many shops donate a percentage of their profits to earthquake appeals; and third, you deserve it. Westfield Mall and Bush Inn Shopping Centre in Riccarton, Dress Smart and The Hub in Hornby, Northlands in Papanui, Barrington Shopping Centre and Merivale Mall are all open for business again.
